What to Do in Monte Carlo Monaco on a Mediterranean Cruise

Ostentatious is perhaps too strong a word, but diamonds, lavish yachts and Ferraris are all part of the lifestyle here. As is a flutter at Monte Carlo’s most famous landmark, the Grand Casino. On the other hand, because Monte Carlo is such a small city, we didn't realize how easy it would be to get around on our own and ultimately felt we didn't need the app. For more independent types who would be comfortable without an organized itinerary and don't mind occasionally asking locals for directions, we say ditch the app and create your own route.

The journey takes around half an hour and follows a very scenic route along the coast. Halfway between Monaco and Nice is the pretty medieval village of Eze, which can be reached on buses operated by Ligne d'Azur. Whatever you decide to do while in Monaco, it’s a cruise port that won’t disappoint. From ancient history and multi-cultures to expansive museums and international cuisine, there is something to please everyone in the family. While the high rollers have their own private gaming area, tourists are welcome to try their luck, too but only in a section of the casino which opens in the mid-afternoon through the wee hours.

Monaco (Monte Carlo) Cruise Port Facilities?

Explore the wonderful old villages along the Côte d'Azur from Nice to medieval Eze or Cannes, Grasse and lovely St. Paul de Vence - each one a jewel to be savored. Booking a Mediterranean cruise vacation is the perfect way to explore the south of France. Monaco cruises often range from nights providing cruisers with a variety of different entertainment and dining options. After a visit to the Casino, walk around back and see the ornately carved exterior of the adjoining Opera House, opened in 1879. It was built by Charles Garnier who several years later, also designed the much larger Paris Opera House.

We then made our way to Monte Carlo Harbor for an even closer look at the views from above. Here, glitzy million-dollar yachts are anchored with a sense of pride and best enjoyed while strolling along the docks with a cup of coffee in hand. Keep in mind you can spend far less to explore Monaco on your own -- $129 per person adds up if you're a couple or group traveling together. But if you want to see Grasse and Saint-Paul, that's harder to do on your own on a cruise; you would need to rent a car, get a more expensive private tour or take a series of buses that would add up to too much transit time.

Private tours suit people who like to have some control over the itinerary but want to leave the map behind and follow an expert. Jean Marc's per-person costs were cheaper than the ship's tours; this isn't always the case, however, so make sure you shop around. In addition to historical sites, Monaco offers several opportunities for experiencing the natural side of the Mediterranean.

Yes, if you’d like an introduction to F1 racing and get a feel for the excitement of attending a live race event, but if you’re a serious race fan, you’re going to want the full meal deal. Monaco’s streets are more glamorous from behind the wheel of a luxury car. Cruise down the same drags used for the Formula 1 Grand Prix races, Monaco’s famous annual event.

A 50-year concession for Monte Carlo's casino gaming rooms was granted in 1861. Since 1898, the concession right is given to the private company "Societe des Bains de Mer de Monaco" aka SBM (Monaco Sea Bath Society, 1863-founded). The company is publicly traded and Monaco's government has the majority stake. On some of these cruises you have the option to book just the cruise only.

When you hear the name Monaco, your first thoughts probably turn to glitz, glamour, and the famous casino of the same name. Although this city-state is famous for its opulent living, it actually has an incredible history that is waiting to be discovered by those who choose to dig a little deeper. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Starting at just $1,176, choose the perfect cruise from Monaco that fits your traveling desires. Most commonly, cruises from Monaco go to exciting destinations such as Europe - British Isles & Western, Europe - All, Europe - Eastern Mediterranean, Europe - Western Mediterranean, and Baltic Sea. However, whenever you are fortunate enough to visit Monaco and the dazzling district of Monte Carlo, you'll find plenty to do.

The downside, in our experience, was the large size of the group and the fact that there were several groups doing the same tour. Because two or three of the groups left at around the same time, there were backups in certain areas. Additionally, there was some crossover with the QuietVox systems -- radio transmitters that allow those on the tour to hear the guide via an earpiece without having to be immediately next to him or her. We ended up listening to the wrong guide for the first few minutes of the tour. Drive along the famous Grand Corniche with its stunning views of Monaco and the Old City; then stroll through this marvelous quarter and its pink Grimaldi Palace.

The list of other French Riviera ports also includes Antibes, Bandol, Cannes, Cassis, Marseille, Sanary-sur-Mer, St Raphael, St Tropez, Toulon, Villefranche-sur-Mer (Nice). Monte Carlo is Monaco's capital city and principal port located on Mediterranean Sea. By territory (2 km2 / 0,8 mi2), Monaco is the world's second-smallest country (preceding only Vatican City in Rome Italy). The country's total population is around 40,000, while Monte Carlo's population is around 3,500 ("metro" around 15,000). Monaco's land border length is 5,5 km (3,4 mi), its coastline is 4 km (2,4 mi), its maritime boundary extends 22 km (14 mi) into the sea. On our tour, we covered a great amount of territory, off the beaten track, walking at my pace, a refreshing change from waiting for slower walkers to catch up.

In Grasse, the factory's guide explained the perfume industry, how flowers are pressed to obtain their essential oils and the job requirements of "The Nose" -- the person who blends the oils into new scents. She was engaging and knowledgeable, discussing the latest scent trends. This tiny enclave of 370 acres surrounds a sheltered harbor that draws yachts from around the world to enjoy the beautiful scenery, mild weather and elegant casino. Glamorous Monte Carlo is one of Monaco's four quarters, which also include La Condamine, the business district; Monaco-ville, the capital; and Fontvieille, an area built on reclaimed land.

The exclusive Belvedere VIP excursion includes access to the Automobile Club of Monaco (ACM), which organized the first Grand Prix in 1929. The small ship line believes that it pioneered Monaco Grand Prix cruises, holding the first themed sailing in the 1990s. The line offers a true F1 immersive sailing, where everyone onboard receives included tickets to events. Cruising to the Monaco Grand Prix has been an option for race-lovers (and those who love them) since the 1990s. Windstar Cruises is the only cruise line to offer sailings where all passengers booked on the cruise actually receive tickets in the fare; other lines offer Grand Prix excitement through excursions (some of them quite high end).
